In the time past, employment into public offices have been under the mence of connection with high profile in the government, and this as been the trend till today.
Government workers have used this opportunity to pass jobs provided by the State or Federal government to their own people, even to the extent that the unborn child already have a job waiting for him or her, while people without connections kept on searching for jobs.
I had a bitter taste of this experience, last weekend, when I came across a news story online about Lagos State Employability Support Project and any interested member should visit his or her Local Government for the Skill Training Form.
The next day, I visited my Local Government, on getting there, the look on the face of the lady that was supposed to attend to me, is the look of 'I've come to beg for money ', leaving without collecting the form was not an option for me because i seriously needed to lay my hands on something that can fetch me income, and to crown it all, she gave me the shock of my life, saying 'the form is finished, that people have filled the One Hundred and twenty(120) forms that was allocated to the local government '.
But something kept telling me this can't be true, who are those that filled the forms? They must have been someone like me looking for means of getting income to sustain themselves, but why can't i be lucky and get just a form out of the 120 pieces to fill.
Then i remembered everything in Nigeria is about politics 'Who know Who', so i walked up to my friend who is one of the Honourable's in same Local Government and explain why i was there to him.
Immediately, he put a call through to the office of the lady who initially told me application form was not available to get him one, and i went back to her office to fill and submit but to my greatest surprise, the number on the form given to me was Number 53 (No 53), then i asked myself, was this lady going to invite all her generation to come and fill the 120 forms allocated to this Local Government or what?
If Nigeria should continue this way, that means there is no hope for those without connections.
Someone once told me 'people feel like they own the world when they are employed into government offices and what annoys me most is that, these government employees salaries are from tax money generated from the citizens that are struggling to make ends meet.
To know if am the only person having this thought about government workers, i engaged in a discussion with some of my colleagues in the Journalism profession, i realized am not the only person and these are some comments below .
"I have had many bad experience with government worker's but the one i can never forget happened to me in health center with the medical personnels, i feel they lack ethics of their job, they forget they are dealing with lives " Ifeoma Mbaike.
"I remembered when i went for my Voters Card registration, we were there even before they resumed office and probably because it was on a Friday. After attending to few of us at the beginning, then after sometime, they started jisting(discussing) and at the end of the day, we were told to come back the following day which i couldn't because of my schedule" Favour Kayode.
"Mine was a very annoying one, i went for my LASRA registration and we were on a queue in a very hot sun, only for one of the staffs to bring someone from the ending part to the front, all because she was a relative to one of the staffs " Tolani Owolabi.
To curb this bad attitude among the government employees, i feel training about hospitality should be given to them when employed and to let them understand that, they are there to serve and not to be served.
